It’s the start of a new day. You are up, running late and you eat what all the contemporary wisdom says to eat. You start with a bowl of health cereal swimming in soy milk, topped with fruit and a few nuts and maybe even a bagel with nut butter. But wait, two hours into your morning you are starving. That supposedly healthy breakfast leaves you hungry and the need for sugar is running high.
There is another way that keeps the weight down, keeps you productive at work and doesn’t take anymore time. A breakfast with a protein, healthy fat and a carb that doesn’t make your blood sugar sky rocket will leave you feeling full and energized while keeping you from the tray of donuts and bagels in the conference room.
Try these three options:
Eggs with veggies and avocado: Scrambled, sunny side up, however you like them. Add in a veggie of your choice to make a scramble or put it on the side with some avocado for a healthy fat and to stay full longer. You will feel great knowing you already have a serving of veggies under your belt. (Hint: Chop up a few extra veggies and take them to work for a snack!)
A shake: My favorite is a handful of spinach and kale, a few pieces of pineapple or blueberries (frozen is convenient), a tablespoon of coconut oil, a scoop of protein powder, and a liquid- either water, almond or coconut milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon. Do not be intimidated by a shake if it is green, the veggies don’t stand out much. (Hint: Make a serving and a half so you can take extra as a late morning snack.)
Leftovers from dinner: So you had chicken with a sweet potato and asparagus last night and now think I’m crazy. Try it. You may feel better than you would think chowing down on the previous night’s meal instead of grabbing a muffin from your local coffee shop. Why not start your day off with some color and macros on your plate? Plus, it is already made which means you don’t have to cook and can hit that snooze button one more time.
Try rotating through these meals throughout the week to see which leaves you feeling full and fired up for a fresh start to your day. And for you intermittent fasters out there, the same applies to you when you do have that first meal. Enjoy!
